What is the greatest upset of all time?

At the beginning of the 2015-16 Premier league season, the oddsmakers gave Leicester City FC a 5,000-1 chance to win the Premier League.Guess what? They won the Premier League. That got me thinking, what’s the greatest upset of all time?Well, here are my top ten rankings of the sports world’s greatest upsets.

10.Rulon Gardner defeats Aleksandr Karelin in the 2000 Sydney Olympic final

In the sport of Greco-Roman Wrestling,Russian Aleksandr Karelin was undefeated in 13 years.

In the sport of Greco-Roman Wrestling,American Rulon Gardner was an unknown dairy farmer with an amputated toe due to frostbite.

So you can see who everyone thought would win the Olympic final, right? But as a kid growing up on a farm,Gardner wrestled cows for fun. That was real practice for the Olympics.Gardner orchestrated a huge upset to win 1-0.

9.1988 Women’s NCAA basketball tournament first round:(16)Harvard Crimson 71-67 (1)Stanford Cardinal

The Crimson are the only No.16 seed to defeat a No.1 seed in the NCAA tournament, men’s or women’s.In fact, women’s 1,2,and 3 seeds are 263-1 in the tournament. After Stanford lost two key players, the door was open for Harvard to steal the win.

8.Buster Douglas defeats Mike Tyson;February 11,1990

Douglas had been through a lot before the match. His mother passed away, his son had a kidney problem,he had the flu,and was a 42-1 underdog. The fight was all Douglas however, and that was one of the greatest upsets in boxing history.

7.Cassius Clay defeats Sonny Liston;February 25,1964

I give this the edge on Douglas-Tyson because of what it started and what it ended.Clay was undefeated, but the great Liston was supposed to be better.Liston’s loss ended his reign at the top of the boxing mountain, and started the reign of Clay, later known as the great, recently deceased,Muhammad Ali.

6.1906 World Series:Chicago White Sox 4-2 Chicago Cubs

In addition to being the first Series with teams from the same city to play against each other, this seemed like the easiest one to predict. The Cubs were 116-36(they only played 152 games back then, compared to 162 today),a record which still stands today. The Sox,known as the Hitless Wonders, had the worst batting average in the AL.After splitting the first four games, the Sox closed out an incredible upset by winning the 5th and 6th games.

5.Super Bowl XLII:New York Giants 17-14 New England Patriots

New England was a record 16-0,the Giants were an 11-5 wildcard.New England had two-time Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady, the Giants had dark horse Eli Manning. But thanks to a couple miracles,NY stole the show.David Tyree made an amazing catch by going up for the ball and pressing it against his helmet to keep the Giants last-gasp game-winning drive alive. When Plaxico Burress made the winning TD catch,Giants fans across the country erupted, and the Giants won.

4.1985:NCAA Championship Game:Villanova 66-64 Georgetown

The Wildcats played a nearly perfect game to beat the Hoyas, widely regarded as one of the best teams of all time.Villanova missed just six shots and five free throws to win their first championship.

3.The Miracle of Belo Horizonte:USA defeats England 1-0 at 1950 World Cup

The US was outscored 45-2 their last seven matches, including a team-record 11-0 to Norway.England was a superpower with a post-war record of 23-4-3(W-L-T).They beat Italy 4-0 and Portugal 10-0 on the road. They beat Chile 2-0 in their first group match.America lost to Spain 3-1 in their match. The match was close, but an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Frank Borghi plus a 37th minute goal by Joe Gaetjens won it for the USA.

2.The Miracle on Ice:USA defeats USSR 4-3 in 1980 Olympic final round

This is the greatest upset in American sports history.Back in 1980,pro players could not play in the Olympics,so NHL players could not compete.Coach Herb Brooks fielded a team of amateur players. The Soviets didn’t have a hockey league,so their best players could play. The US tied Sweden 2-2,then stunned silver medal favorite Czechoslovakia 7-3.They crushed Norway and Romania 5-1 and 7-2 respectively, then came back from down two to beat West Germany 4-2.Meanwhile the Soviets absolutely annihilated Japan 16-0 and pummeled Holland 17-4.After an 8-1 destruction of Poland, they beat Finland 4-2,then beat Canada 6-4.Both advanced to the last round,in which the top two teams from each group played a round-robin tournament.Games between teams from the same group carried over. Two points for a win,and one for a draw. The Soviets took an early lead, but the US tied it 1-1.Then USSR scored, then US.Then USSR,then US…twice. They led 4-3 with 10 minutes to go.The win gave them a chance to clinch against Finland. They won 4-2.The Soviets beat Sweden 9-2 to finish a point shy of the US’s total.

1.Leicester City FC wins 2015-16 English Premier League

Leicester was in last place for much of last season, but won seven of their last nine games to finish 14th and avoid relegation. Most picked champions Chelsea and Arsenal to win,and City had 5000-1 odds to win and 3-1 odds to be relegated,or move down to play minor league.City came out of the gate strong and never looked back, finishing with 81 points.Arsenal was second with 71.Leicester had Player of the Year Jamie Vardy too. There was a higher chance of finding Bigfoot,Nessie,or Elvis alive than Leicester winning. And that was the greatest upset of all time.
