The NFL is officially back for its 100th season, and the league is more wide open than ever. The off-season was one of the most entertaining in a few years, and there are a slew of legitimate contenders in both conferences. There are a plethora of stars on new teams this season who will immediately be expected to perform, and only one division (AFC East) appears to be won without contest. At least a quarter of the league has a legitimate case for number 1 in these power rankings.
These power rankings are based entirely off of how a team looks right now, and not how I expect them to finish at the end of the season. That being said, here they are:
1. Kansas City Chiefs
After the news that Tyreek Hill will not be suspended, Kansas City returns largely the same offense minus Kareem Hunt and have added Tyrann Mathieu and Frank Clark defensively. At 23, reigning MVP Patrick Mahomes will only get better, and KC should make a run at the Lombardi in 2019.
2. New Orleans Saints
After two straight crushing playoff losses, New Orleans returns nearly the same team in what might be Drew Brees’ final shot at that elusive second ring.
3. New England Patriots
The defending champs recently inked 6-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady to an extension, and New England will always have a shot with him and coach Belichick at the helm.
4. Los Angeles Rams
After a dismal Super Bowl performance, Los Angeles will try to run it back, although the health of Todd Gurley remains a question.
5. Indianapolis Colts
One of the league’s biggest surprises last season, Indy is a legit contender this year behind MVP contender Andrew Luck and DROY Darius Leonard.
6. Los Angeles Chargers
The Bolts are all-in on what might be their last shot to win a ring with Phillip Rivers, as a loaded roster must shake off its playoff ghosts to reach the promised land.
7. Philadelphia Eagles
After an injury-riddled 2018, Philly’s current roster is arguably better than that of the 2017 Super Bowl LII championship team, but the health of Carson Wentz is always a question.
8. Dallas Cowboys
They are set up to contend for a long time with an elite defense and improving offense, but they could be in trouble if Ezekiel Elliott’s holdout isn’t solved quickly.
9. Chicago Bears
After a 12-4 resurgence in 2018, expect the Bears to fall off by a few games after some key losses on defense.
10. Cleveland Browns
Cleveland had the best offseason in football, and now must live up to the hype as AFC North favorites.
11. Houston Texans
The Texans are being slept on after an 11-5 AFC South championship season, and should challenge the Colts for division supremacy.
12. Atlanta Falcons
Matt Ryan was arguably better than his 2016 MVP form last season, and Atlanta has a real shot at dethroning New Orleans at the top of the NFC South.
13. Seattle Seahawks
Their roster is a shell of the 2013 and 2014 squads who were meant to rule the NFC for years to come, but with Russell Wilson under center, they can never be counted out.
14. Minnesota Vikings
A 13-3 season capped off with an NFC title game appearance was followed by a disappointing 8-7-1 year while failing to make the playoffs. If Kirk Cousins can step his game up against top level teams in a crowded NFC, they should be back to playing in January.
15. Baltimore Ravens
The AFC North champions gained Earl Thomas on defense but lost C.J. Mosley, and will need Lamar Jackson to be less run-reliant if they are to repeat within the division.
16. Pittsburgh Steelers
After losing their two best players this offseason following a playoff miss, Pittsburgh appears to have missed its window to clinch its first Super Bowl since 2009.
17. Carolina Panthers
Still a very talented team, they imploded in the second half of 2018, and will have to hope Cam Newton’s shoulder holds up if they plan to return to January.
18. Jacksonville Jaguars
Nick Foles is QB now and the Bortles era is over, but can he lead the Jags back to the playoffs behind a still-spectacular defense.
19. Washington Redskins
Remember that this team was on top of the NFC East until Alex Smith’s injury, and with former Ohio State QB Dwayne Haskins at the helm, they could surprise this year.
20. Green Bay Packers
I’m not confident in this team after last season’s 6-9-1 record with a healthy Aaron Rodgers, but they should make a run at the playoffs with a revamped coaching staff.
21. Tennessee Titans
After 3 straight 9-7 seasons with just one playoff appearance in that time, 2019 appears to be a prove-it year for former No.2 overall pick Marcus Mariota.
22. Buffalo Bills
Josh Allen may very well lead this team to the playoffs, as he showed a ton of promise his rookie year and can only get better.
23. San Francisco 49ers
After ending 2017 5-0 behind Jimmy Garoppolo at QB andstarting 2018 1-1 before he went down with an injury en route to a 4-12 finish, the 49ers are a huge enigma heading into 2019.
24. Detroit Lions
Detroit had an underrated offseason, but it likely won’t be enough to take them back to the playoffs.
25. New York Jets
The Jets had a great offseason, picking up both Le’Veon Bell and C.J. Mosley, and will almost certainly be better in 2019. With young QB Sam Darnold showing signs of blossoming last year, the Jets may emerge as a playoff contender soon enough.
26. Oakland Raiders
Are all the offseason additions enough to take the Raiders back to the playoffs before they leave for Vegas? Probably not, but the future looks bright for the Silver and Black.
27. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
2018 was a disaster for them, and they will remain at the bottom of the NFC South for the foreseeable future.
28. Denver Broncos
Without a truly elite QB since the days of Peyton Manning, Denver will rely on its defense to get whatever wins it can for the next few years.
29. Cincinnati Bengals
After years of playoff futility they have finally gone into an all-out rebuild, with no end in sight.
30. Arizona Cardinals
No.1 pick Kyler Murray’s development will be the main thing for Cardinals fans to watch this season, as contention is out of the question.
31. New York Giants
The Giants questionable offseason has them at the basement of the NFC for now, and for a few years to come from the looks of it.
32. Miami Dolphins
Unless Ryan Fitzpatrick can sustain a high level of play after Week 4, or Josh Rosen somehow has a Brady-type breakout season, the Heat will remain the best team in South Beach, which hasn’t been a good thing since the days of LeBron.
