Former Argentine soccer star Diego Maradona has died this morning after suffering a heart attack at the age of 60. Known best for leading his country to victory at the 1986 FIFA World Cup, the undersized midfielder thrilled fans for years with world-class ball control and playmaking ability, and is often regarded as the greatest dribbler of all time. Nicknamed “El Pibe de Oro”, Spanish for “The Golden Kid”, Maradona is considered by many to be the greatest player of all time, often mentioned along with the likes of players such as Pele, Lionel Messi, and Cristiano Ronaldo in such discussions.
Maradona’s greatest accomplishment remains his 1986 World Cup title with Argentina, as he won Golden Ball honors as tournament MVP and provided the game-winning assist with seven minutes to play in the final against West Germany. He is credited with having scored 354 goals in his professional career for club and country.
Despite his success, Maradona struggled with drug and alcohol problems at the height of his career, and was banned from the 1994 World Cup for doping. However, he was able to rebound into a successful managerial career, and remained in the public eye until his death.
Maradona lived, and lives on, as a legend the world over and a godlike figure in Argentina. He will be remembered for generations as a man who changed the Beautiful Game forever, and one of the greatest players to have ever lived.
