Man City Win Fourth League Title in Five Years Behind Last-Ditch Rally

For the second time in the past four seasons, the Premier League title race came down to Manchester City and Liverpool to be decided on the final matchday, and for the second time, it was the Citizens who prevailed, edging their Scouse rivals by a single point for their sixth Premier League title. Needing to win to clinch the league after Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over Wolves, City staged a rousing comeback from 2-0 down against Aston Villa, scoring three goals in a six minute span to claim the three points necessary for the trophy.

The runner-up finish derails Liverpool’s quest to become the second team to win the domestic treble after City in 2018-19, and their hopes of winning an unprecedented quadruple with the UEFA Champions League Final against Real Madrid to be played next week. Jurgen Klopp’s men now shift their focus to winning a seventh European crown.

City manager Pep Guardiola has won his tenth league title across Europe’s top 5 leagues, adding his fourth title with City to his three each with Germany’s Bayern Munich and Spain’s Barcelona. His four Premier League titles trails only Sir Alex Ferguson for the most in league history by a single manager.
