One Year On: The Top 10 Moments in Sports History on the Anniversary of the 2022 World Cup Final

Monday marked the one-year anniversary of Argentina’s victory in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Final, arguably the greatest moment in the history of all sports. After over 150 years of organized sports being played across the world, here are the top 10 such  moments:

10. 2003 Australian Open Final: Serena Williams 7-6 (4) 3-6 6-4

Some of the criteria I used in making this list were the impact of the games and the significance they had on the careers involved, precisely why this match makes the list. This match was far from Serena’s most impressive, and although it was a thriller in its own right, she rallied from 5-2 down and a pair of match points in the semifinal against Kim Clijsters just days before. Rather, this match proved to be the first time we were truly given an indication as to just how great the greatest female athlete of all time would someday be. This match was Serena’s fourth straight Slam final appearance having won each of the last three against her sister Venus, and with a win she would join an exclusive club of players to hold all four Slam titles at once. Once again, she faced her sister in a matchup of the top two ranked players in the world, and once again she prevailed after over two hours and three tight sets, staking her claim as one of the greats at the young age of 21.

9. 2019 Masters: Tiger Woods Wins With 275 (-13)

This moment is the antithesis of the greatness of the Australian Open Final: Instead of being the first great moment to introduce a legend to the world, it served as a finale, a last hurrah for who many consider to be the greatest golfer of all time. Entering the tournament, Woods had not won a Major since 2008 or the Masters since 2005, and was considered by many to have already won his final major. After a 2018 season that showed flashes of his old form, he turned in a spectacular 13-under-par showing to win the Masters after trailing by two strokes entering the final round, the first time he had ever won a major after trailing through 54.

8. 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final: United States 0-0 (5-4 pens) China

The United States and China both entered the final having won every match up to that point, and after 120 minutes of action failed to produce a single goal, much less a winner, penalties decided the trophy in front of a packed house at the Rose Bowl. The lasting image of Brandi Chastain dropping to her knees in celebration before being mobbed by her teammates after scoring the penalty will live on for generations, and the match itself was a watershed moment for women’s sports.

7. 2016 NBA Finals Game 7: Cleveland Cavaliers 93-89 Golden State Warriors

Having won Games 5 and 6 to force a Game 7 after going 3-1 down, the Cavaliers stunned the 73-win Warriors 93-89 in Game 7 to win their first-ever title and become the only team to ever win the NBA Finals from 3-1 down. LeBron James dropped a 27-point triple-double in a legacy-defining performance to pull off the greatest comeback in league history and cement his place among the greatest to ever play.

6. 2019 Cricket World Cup Final: England def. New Zealand by boundary count

The greatest ever final in the greatest tournament of the world’s second-most popular sport. Lord’s played host to a thrilling match that saw both teams tied on 241 runs after 50 overs each, and again leveled at 15 runs apiece in the Super Over. England prevailed to win its first World Cup having won the boundary count tiebreaker, 26-17, after New Zealand’s Martin Guptill was run out on the final ball to preserve the tie.

5. 2019 Wimbledon Final: Novak Djokovic 7-6 (5) 1-6 7-6 (4) 4-6 13-12 (3) Roger Federer

Funnily enough, that World Cup final wasn’t even the greatest moment of July 14, 2019. On the same day, just over 10 miles away, the greatest Wimbledon final ever played transpired between Serbia’s Novak Djokovic and Switzerland’s Roger Federer. The Swiss dominated much of the match, winning more games and points than his counterpart, and even holding two championship points on his own serve at 8-7 40-15 in the fifth set. However, Djokovic was simply better when it mattered, saving both championship points en route to winning his thor set via tiebreak to claim the title. While arguably better matches may have been played, this match had and unparalleled level of drama, and eventually turned the tide of history in Djokovic’s favor, ending Federer’s stint at the top of the game and paving the Serb’s path to claiming the title of “Greatest of All Time”.

4. 1936 Berlin Olympics: Jesse Owens’ Finest Hour

Owens will go down in history as one of the greatest athletes of all time, and his most impressive feat may well have been the year before the Olympics when he claimed four world records in a 45-minute span. However, his performance at the Berlin Olympics was one of the most groundbreaking moments of the 21st century. Winning four gold medals in front of a dictator bent upon proving his own nation’s superiority and at a time when the whole world struggled with racism and segregation is an achievement that will never be forgotten.

3. Miracle on Ice: United States 4-3 Soviet Union

The Miracle is another game that doubled as a poignant cultural moment in addition to a stunning athletic upset. The United States’ team of amateurs shocked a Soviet team hailed as the greatest in the sport amidst the height of the Cold War, a matchup they had lost 10-3 in an exhibition prior to the tournament. Often regarded as the greatest upset in sports history, No.3 would feel a little low for it, if not for the incredible top 2…

2. The Rumble in the Jungle: Muhammad Ali def. Georgia Foreman via 8th-round KO

The Fight of the Century may have been a better boxing match, the Thrilla in Manila was a war of attrition, but the Rumble had everything. The old champ versus the younger current champion, a major upset, and the greatest of all time cementing his legacy with the most iconic strategy of all time. Ali took punch after punch, Rocky-style, and his rope-a-dope technique allowed him to tire out the champion, before landing a stunning knockout in the 8th to reclaim his belt in the greatest fight of all time.

1. 2022 FIFA World Cup Final: Argentina 3-3 (4-2 pens) France

Nothing else could ever be Number 1. The greatest match of the greatest sport in the world on its greatest stage, with its greatest player of all time outdueling the greatest future challenger to his throne. Kylian Mbappe may one day build a GOAT case of his own, but this night in Lusail belonged to Lionel Messi, although not before the Frenchman fought tooth and nail to steal the show. In the greatest villain performance in the history of sports, Mbappe scored twice in 90 seconds to turn what seemed like Argentina’s coronation into the fight of their lives. The hour that followed was a battle of gladiators, Mbappe and Messi taking the ball down each time, making every dribble and creating every chance. Ultimately, nothing could separate their superhuman efforts, and after both scored penalties to open the shootout, it fell upon their teammates to decide the title. Two of Mbappe’s three teammates failed to convert from the spot, while all of Messi’s did, and thus Argentina were crowned champions of the greatest spectacle of history.
