American Taylor Fritz Again Defeats World No.4 Alexander Zverev, Into First Career Slam Semifinal

American Taylor Fritz reached his first career Grand Slam semifinal with a 7-6 (2) 3-6 6-4 7-6 (3) victory over German World No.4 Alexander Zverev. With the victory, Fritz continued a three-year streak of American men reaching their maiden Slam semifinals at the U.S. Open, following Ben Shelton in 2023 and Frances Tiafoe in 2022. It marks his second consecutive Slam with a win over the higher-ranked German, having come back from a 2-set deficit to defeat Zverev in the fourth round at Wimbledon.

Zverev, who will rise to the No.2 spot in the rankings despite the loss, came closer than ever all season long to finally win his first career Grand Slam, but will end yet another calendar year without one to his name despite a final appearance at Roland-Garros, a semifinal in Melbourne, and today’s quarterfinal berth while being the highest ranked player remaining on his half of the draw.

Fritz will either take on Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov or fellow American Frances Tiafoe in his semifinal, and will look to become America’s first men’s singles Grand Slam finalist since Wimbledon 2009, and the first to do so at the U.S. Open since 2006, the last to accomplish both being former World No.1 Andy Roddick.
