PSG’s Late Heroics Prove Too Much For Tottenham in Super Cup Thriller

Paris Saint-Germain defeated Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 on penalties after a frenzied comeback down two goals in the final five minutes of regulation plus stoppage time to clinch their first ever UEFA Super Cup title.

After goals from Mickey van de Ven and Cristian Romero on either side of halftime put the Europa League champions up 2-0, the London club withstood a dominant PSG performance for the greater part of the second half and looked set to capture their second trophy in a matter of months after a 17-year trophy drought before this season. However, a whirlwind comeback featuring goals from Lee Kang-in in the 85th minute and Goncalo Ramos in the 94th forced a penalty shootout, where misses from van de Ven and Mathys Tel set up Nuno Mendes to coolly finish the match with his kick from the spot.

PSG added to their haul of titles in 2025 with their fifth trophy of the calendar year, following victories in Ligue 1, the Trophee des Champions, the Coupe de France, and their first ever UEFA Champions League title. They can still add one more at the FIFA Intercontinental Cup this winter, which would technically make them the third European side (after 2009 Barcelona and 2020 Bayern Munich) to win six trophies in a calendar year. However, the former two won a Club World Cup title as part of their runs, while PSG were defeated in the final this summer by Chelsea, denying them the chance at a possible septuple.

For Tottenham, the loss marks a missed opportunity at silverware for a club that had gone so long without it prior to their Europa League final win over Manchester United, their first trophy since the 2008 Carabao Cup despite finishing 17th in the Premier League last season. They will turn their focus to their Prem opener on Saturday against Burnley, looking to use their European success as a springboard for an improvement in the league standings in 2026.
